Randomness pervades science and society, both as a nuisance whose deleterious effects are to be eliminated or minimised, and as a fundamental property in the description, modelling and analysis of phenomena, natural and other. The Probability and Statistics programme contributes to mathematical research in this area, on the one hand by engaging in pure research in a number of fields, on the other hand by participating in a variety of interdisciplinary projects. The group also plays an important role in the education of the future engineers at DUT. Every year more than 1000 students are taught the basic principles of Probability and Statistics. The group possesses expertise in a number of fields and the programme aims to contribute to the accretion of fundamental knowledge in these fields. They are: non parametric estimation, robust statistics, statistical physics, stochastic operations research (particularly, queueing), ergodic theory and dynamical systems, branching processes, and stochastic analysis. The interdisciplinary segment of the programme is driven by two sources. One is found in the just mentioned areas of pure research: the perspective they offer on practical problems involving randomness provides inspiration for new projects. In this manner a number of projects has been initiated, many with partners in other groups within the university. Other projects have been started in a more serendipitous nature: for some reason a problem, from industry or society, with a stochastic component attracts attention; some of those lead to research projects, with various partners.
